Day 5 in St Thomas

We get up early this morning and headed to Sapphire Beach. Right outside our rooms, we saw two huge iguanas sitting on the top of a tree sunning themselves. Kind of creepy.

We had some difficulty finding beach chairs, but Sue was determined and found us four. The view from the beach was gorgeous. You could see St John and other smaller islands. It was a bit windy, and the sun was in and out, but lovely.the sand was white, and silky with what looked like finely crushed shells or coral. We found shade under one of the many mangrove trees. Poor Carolyn was freezing, and at one point had 3 towels covering her, and her hoody over her head. The five of us have very different body temperatures, and haven’t found a temperature that works for everyone. I loved it. While chilling, this one duck came up to us. I fed it peanuts, and it even took one from my hand…so cute. We sat many others later, and these beautiful black and white birds soaring in the sky.

We sat on the beach for a few hours. Sue and I decided to go for a swim. The water felt warmer then it did at Megan’s Bay. It there’s a drop off when you walk in and the waves can really toss you around. So I’m sure it was comical watching us. We eventually got out the snorkel gear and floated around looking for fish. We didn’t see much, just a few schools of fish, some sponges, coral and seaweed. We laughed more than anything else.

We decided to leave as an afternoon rain shower passed through. We heard that a good place to eat nearby was Off the Grid, some for the best barbecue on the island, and it just happened to be at the top of the hill after leaving the beach.

We didn’t realize it was a food truck. The owner is also a chef at the Grand Palazzo restaurant in the Ritz Carlton. There is a reason why this place is rated #1 on tripadvisor. I’m not much of a BBQ girl but the sauce they used is just ridiculously good and the beef brisket and smoked wings were just so tender, it melts in your mouth!! Thanks Joanne for finding this place.
