Day 4 – Kauai

The days here are just flying by. Today we had breakfast in Hanalei while Pat and Vic went to church. They said 75% of the attendees were tourists. We went back to the Wake Up Cafe, and split a few delicious menu items – coconut pineapple cinnamon bun, custard french toast topped with pineapple and coconut made with Portuguese sweet bread, bacon and a quesadilla with hash browns. A light breakfast. It was sunny, so we sat outside and enjoyed the mountain views. There were only two waterfalls we could see.

We returned home, and while I was getting my Lomi Lomi 1.5 hour massage on the balcony in the sun, mom went with everyone to the secret beach, otherwise known as Kauapea Beach. Little did she know that the steep walk to the beach was more than she bargained for. Fortunately Vic and George helped, for which she was very grateful. She described the walk down as hair raising. The beach itself was beautiful but not a swimming beach this time of year. It’s known for its seclusion and beauty and for many years attracted nude sunbathers, but no one was there today. The surf was pounding against the black rocks. The tidal pools filled with water, so you couldn’t see the pools. The other amazing siting was Carol in shorts. I can’t remember the last time I’ve seen her wear shorts.

We all met for lunch at Kapaa at the Shrimp Station. According to them, they have the best coconut shrimp on the planet. And they really do. Everyone had something different – sweet chili garlic shrimp, Thai spicy shrimp, garlic shrimp and a shrimp burger. All very good. We shopped at a few stores in Kapaa. George and Vic found Hawaiian shirts for themselves, mom finally found the bag she was looking for, I bought some jewelry and local chocolate.

On the drive home we stopped at a few places, tried to find the monkey in the mountain, stopped at the scenic overlooks, and meandered back. Our plan is to stay in tonight, chill with some appetizers, and enjoy one another’s company. Tomorrow we visit the southern coast on our way to our sunset cruise along the Napali Coast.
