Day 8 – Maui

We woke up early to clear skies in Kauai. Packed up the car, said goodbye to everyone and headed to the airport. We caught a Hawaiian Airlines flight and landed in Maui around 11:30. We got the rental car, and headed for the hotel. We tried checking in early, but our room wasn’t ready. So we had lunch at the grill overlooking the water. Mom ordered a fruit dish and it came in half a pineapple and looked like a piece of art. I had chicken lettuce wraps, and just as lunch arrived, it started to rain. We were under an umbrella but still got wet. Having been in Kauai for a week, we just stayed put, in hopes to outlast the rain.

We decided to head to Lahaina figuring we could shop in the rain. It was only about 30 minutes from the hotel. What amazed us about Maui is how dry it is compared to Kauai. On the way, we drove through acres and acres of sugar cane fields. At first we thought it was just tall grass but knew that couldn’t be right. Mom took a few photos along the way, and let’s just say God gave her other gifts. I have some beautiful shots of our dashboard.

We found a parking spot near Prison Street, and walked the streets of Lahaina. Fortunately it stopped raining. It was a successful trip finding gifts for loved ones. There were many galleries and souvenir shops. After shopping until our feet hurt, we headed for the hotel, checked in and decided to skip dinner for a relaxing evening.

Tomorrow, due to a forecast of rain we plan on staying local versus driving the Road to Hana. Well go to Makena, possibly snorkel, look for sea turtles, shop and head to Mamas Fish House for a late lunch. The menu looks incredible.
