The last two weeks have been busy, so this week I decided to do a cheat week. The cuisine for the weekend is Indian food. Mom is not overly fond of it, and what that really means is she doesn’t like curry. There are so many dishes in the Indian cuisine they don’t have curry. One of the biggest myths about Indian food is that they eat a lot of curry. Yet, many Indian restaurants don’t have curry on the menu, and those that do have it for tourists. Curry powder, which is a pre-mixed blend of spices found across the US, UK, and other countries… isn’t sold in India.
I decided to order an assortment of dishes to hopefully increase her palate and enjoyment of the food. I forgot to mention, I didn’t tell her what we were eating. So this is a gambling week. When we talked earlier in the day, she guessed the we meeting Indian. Here’s what I ordered, all mild, from Shere-E-Punjab Indian Cuisine located in Glenn Mills.
- Onion Kulcha – Kulcha is another popular bread from northern parts of India. This bread is similar to “naan” which is of course more popular in the western world. The difference between kulcha and naan is that kulcha is leavened with baking powder and soda whereas yeast is used in making naan. It didn’t taste very oniony and seemed more like naan than I expected.
- Vegetable and lamb samosas – these pastries have a crisp, thin crust and a spicy lamb filling (keema) mixed with a few sweet peas. They’re served with spicy cilantro-mint chutney. I liked my vegetable Samosa, mom wasn’t overly excited about the lame one.
- Tandoori shrimp – Marinated in a delicious sauce made of Greek yogurt, tandoori masala, lemon, ginger and garlic. This was probably my least favorite dish. It was very red, almost unnaturally red, and didn’t have a lot of flavor.
- Lamb Korma – This dish has tender & succulent pieces of lamb simmered in an amazingly delicious and super flavourful gravy. I order this regularly, but Mom wasn’t very excited by it.
- Punjabi style chicken – Punjabi chicken, a delicious chicken curry which is a gravy kind of a recipe made using onions and tomatoes along with some yoghurt. This chicken curry tastes amazing as it has many whole spices that go into it and the base of the gravy along with the spices. Of all the items we ate, this was our favorite.
- Raita – A creamy, cooling Indian yogurt-based condiment, this easy raita makes a refreshing dip or a saucy side dish. This was a nice addition to each of the entrées.
Overall it was a very filling lunch/linner. Mom also bought us some delicious desserts to finish off the meal. Well I don’t think I converted her to love Indian food, I am proud that you gave it a shot.
Note: the photos on this post are not mine. I forgot to take photos of our food today, but they do represent what they actually look like.

It doesn’t sound “lame” at all! Sounds yummy. I’ll do Indian with you any time. Good for Ginger – she ended up liking the “curry” after all. 🙂
