Day 15 – Praiano to Fiumicino

Today was our last day on the Amalfi coast and technically our last full day in Italy. We got a text this morning around 7 AM from the captain of our boat and unfortunately he needed to cancel. The weather conditions were not ideal. When we looked at the water, it looked fine. But there were Swells and wind that made it not a good boating day. While we were disappointed, we were happy to know that we were getting a full refund since we did not cancel the trip. Yay! So instead we had breakfast at our B&B La Barbera. We ordered a light breakfast thinking we would be leaving in 45 minutes after eating, but one of the women that worked there offered us some additional things such as the cake of the day, which was a hazelnut cake. And some delicious berry yogurt. Then we were full clearly full. The question was what do we do next. It has been a busy trip and we decided that instead of running around town that we would chill in this beautiful location watching the sun go across Positano and Praiano. These photos were taken from the balcony where breakfast was served.

These photos were taken from our balcony.

We had already made the decision that we were going to leave the Amalfi coast today after the boat ride. The drive was as you heard me say in other blog posts that it was stressful. And in order for us to get to the airport in time for our flight tomorrow we would have to leave at 4 AM. Have you seen these windy roads? If not, you’ll understand why even if there’s not a lot of traffic on the road at 4 AM, I was not looking forward to driving in the dark so we had reserved a hotel room less than 2 km from the airport in Rome.

We packed, showered, threw our luggage in the car and checked out probably no later than noon. One of the women who worked there gave us some lemon soaps and a recipe book as a souvenir for our stay. That was very nice of her and the soap smells lovely.

The drive to the airport was supposed to take approximately four hours. There were some places where traffic was rather dense both on the Amalfi coast, and after that. I was happy to drive behind 2 Mercedes vans during the drive through Positano. That’s where the windiest parts of the road are. They were doing a good job at avoiding the buses or should I say not getting hit by the buses. There was really only one section where I was pretty sure I was going to lose my mirror from a bus. But I did not. These photos were taken from of Positano and Praiano during our drive on the Amalfi coast.

Even though we didn’t get to see as much of the Amalfi coast, as I would have liked, mom said she is good, she doesn’t need to come back. I think the windy roads did her in.

It seemed team like a drive that was never going to end, we eventually made it to our weird little hotel. It’s painted blue and has white Roman statues both outside and inside. We checked in, dropped our stuff in the room, and decided to go to a pizzeria close by that the receptionist recommended. We stopped over for some Friday night pizza. Mom had a Napoli pizza with anchovies and I had a Diavalo pizza with spicy salami. The crust was very thin and delicious.

Then back to the hotel, write my final blog, repack, and get some sleep. Looking forward to being home, I miss my girls and they better miss me.
